Mr. J. R. Hill has resigned from the committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society. Reef ton reports that Prince Leopold of Battenberg is paying the town a flying visit. Mr. James Coorabe lias resigned the position of starter for the Wanganui Jockey Club, and Mr. C. O'Connor was yesterday appointed in his stead. A Xew York cablegram reports the death of Admiral Sperry, who was in command of the American squadron which visited New Zealand recently. A Christchurch message states that Prince Leopold of Battenberg and party left that city for The Cass this morning, en route to Westport, where they will catch the Mapourika for Wellington. Constable P-owlands, of the local police force, was unfortunate enough to stumble and fall on Tuesday evening when on his way to the station to go on duty, and lie sustained a severe sprain of his right wrist, which has incapacitated him for the time being. Mr. J. Chynoweth, of Messrs. Edwards and Chynoweth, London, is at present on a visit to Xew Plymouth. Mr. Chynoweth is London buyer for Messrs. Morey and Son and Jno. Avery, Ltd. Mr. Chynoweth is keenly interested in New Zealand scenery, and will visit the Mountain and other resorts (in company with Messrs. Morey and Avery) duriri" his visit here. °
A Tress telegram from Waihi states His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Maitland, left Waihi yesterday morning on his return to Wellington, after spending several days with mining delegates who are attending the annual conference of the Mining Institute. He was much interested during the visit and pleased with the splendid reception he got.
A Press message reports that amongst the passengers by the Aorangi, which arrived nt- Wellington from 'Frisco yesteulav, is Mr. Charles E. Russell, an American journalist, who is re-visiting .\ew Zealand for the purpose of ascertaining how our labor legislation is working. Speaking to an interviewer with reference to the election to the Governorship of New York State, at which he was a Socialist candidate, he saul the result of the voting showed an enormous increase of strength to his party.
