AMUSEMENTS

THE LION AND THE MOUSE. By far the most important dramatic season which has been announced in New Plymouth for many years will be the appearance at the Theatre Royal oil Wednesday next of the brilliant young American actress, Miss Katherinc Grey, and the initial representation here of Charles Klien's world-famous dramatic sensation, "The Lion and the Mouse." Miss Grey's first New Zealand appearance, which took place at Christchurch recently, will long be remembered by those present. A.s the play proceeded the enthusiasm increased, and at the close of tne performance a scene of the wildest excitement took place, and plav-goers and critics declared that Mr. J. C. Williamson had more than atoned to the playgoers for the disappointment at not getting an opportunity to welcome the famous tragedienne, Margaret Anglin, to New Zealand. Wednesday night will also signalise the first appearance here of the brilliant romantic actor, Mr. William Desmond. Miss Grey comes to us with a greater reputation than any dramatic "star" who has previously visited the Dominion. Her success in Australia was described as electrical, and it was generally acknowledged after her brilliant characterisation of the role of Shirley Kossmore in "The Lion and the Mouse" that 110 finer actress.has appeared in the Commonwealth since Sarah Bernhardt. "The Lion and the Mouse" is a 1 strikingly human play. The plot in brief is as follows: —Judge Rossmore, an upright judge, lias incurred the anger of John Burkett Ryder, a millionaire several times over, by certain adverse rulings. Kyder in revenge sets out to ruin liossmore. and does so. The judge is to be impeached and imprisoned. Shirley, the daughter, of the judge, who has been in Europe (luring these happenings, arrives and finds her father crushed and broken. Learning the cause, she determines to fight the implacable enemy alone. How she does so is thrillingly told by Charles Klein. In addition to Miss Grey and Mr. Desmond, the caste will include the following brilliant artists: —Messrs Cyril Mackay, Leslie Victor, .1. B. Atholwood, Winter Hall, George Bryant, T. W. Lloyd, Rupert Julian and George Chalmers; Misses Susie Yaughan, Florence (Jleeson, Elsie Wilson, Alma Vaughan, Kate Towers, Alma Phillips, Kate Chalmers, and Maud Wingfield. Mr. Thos. Faster is stage manager. Positively only the one appearance can be given in New Plymouth, for which the box plans will be opened at Collier's on Saturday morning at S.3<l I a.m. A queue will be formed at S o'clock.
