TARANAKI ACCEPTANCES. Acceptances for the first day's handicaps at the Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting close with the secretary, Mr. E. P. Webster, at 9 p.m. on Monday next. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Races at Pahiatua to-day and to-mor-! row. Bridge and Maori King will be shipped to Sydney on Friday. Two so-called pencillers "flew the coop" at the Kariori meeting. A Wairarapa paper states that Wai-J punui is an unlikely starter at Pahiatua. The Canterbury J.C. summer meeting 1 takes ,place on Thursday and Saturday. { Aristos was well backed away from' the course for the Zealandia Handicap on Saturday, but had no chance with! Miss Winnie.

Amongst the veterans engaged at the Pahiatua meeting the long-service medal goes to Aberration. Culprit's record: Seven starts, six firsts and one second—an unfortunate head defeat at Ellerslie. Ultimatum will make his first appearance as a hurdler at Pahiatua, and will be piloted by C. Cres3. A lot of luivd-earned cash went astray wKea Red Lupin (Deeley) just failed to win the Pony Handicap at Takapuna last Saturday. The Taranaki pony made amends on the second day, when he scored comfortably under a crushin" weight.

Mr. G. Delaney disposed of Merry Lawn for 100 guineas after the Foxton meeting. Trainer Hathaway was the buyer, and it is reported that he will not take the horse to Pahiatua, but! allow liim to build up a little before sporting silk again.

-Goldlinder has paid up for his enna<»e-l ments at the Gisborne R.O. summer I meeting, which takes place on Thursday and Friday. An Auckland paper reports that Lord Islington's ofi'er of £3OOO for Danube did not tempt Mr. G. D. Greenwood to part with his champion.

The Lark broke his leg at Wangamu a few days ago. He was being jumped on the hurdle-course, and collapsed after apparently landing safety one ol his fences. An effort is being made to save the horse. Millenial, who won at Foxton and in engaged at the Pahiatua meeting, is iii foal to Pohutu. The Auckland Cup winner, Waimangu, is still showing signs of lameness, ana will not be able to raee for some eonsiderable time. If Sir Prize remains sound he should win a hurdle race or two when the tracks get softer. lie is said to be an adept at the illegitimate game. The Ilighden youngster, Bronze. lias been sent south to contest the Middle Park Plate at Riecarton on Thursday.

Mr. T. F. Goddard was unfortunate in losing the services of Tiptoe, through the chestnut breaking a leg last week. The Sylvia Park gelding won many goon races in his time, but recently ran without much luck. He was never better in his life than at the Egmont summer meeting last year, when he ran Milan to a head in the Cup, and the next day ran off with the Atkinson Memorial Handicap from a good field. Taranaki has very few good horses this season, and Tiptoe could ill be spared. j Waikaraka is reported to be going well, and will probably be given a run at Pahiatua. | With "Tartar" Julian in the saddle. Delegate was sent out a scorching hot! | favorite at Takapuna on Saturday, bull i once again the unlucky galloper had to i ■ put up with second place. The gallop j should improve him for Saturday next. | | Weights for the Taranaki ami Egmont j i autumn meetings present many problems' | for pickers, and the general opinion is that the handicapper has framed the! weights on equitable lines. j

Jockeys Dcclcy and Wliittaker aril running ncck-iind-neck amongst the! Auckland knights of the pigskin. At Takapuna on Saturday each rode a brace of winners, and they repeated thej trick on Monday. They get practically> the pick of the riding up north. J For winning at Foxton, The Rover will put up 511)S extra in the Welter at Pahiatua, but a few pounds generally makes little difference to a horse when lie is well.

The Pnlmerston trainer, F. Porter, is taking Kilsyth, Te Arai, Ruaparaha and Blrkine (Birkenhead—-Agony) to the Gisborne meeting.

The public were picking them well at Takapuna on Saturday. Three warm favorites in Soultoria, Miss Winnie, and Wauchopc were first past the post. The Bar Vons were supposed to drop dead at midnight on January 31. Most of them we can well do without, but there are many whose dealings were always strictly fair and above board, and they will be missed. Apart from their defects, one has to consider that the blocking of the bookmaker will ruin heaps of country clubs which are. as much entitled to race as their more aristocratic "big brother" clubs, and their annihilation is a decided score for the anti-racin'g community. This scribe always punted with pencillers of high repute, and, to give them their due, they acted always as true sports and gentlemen. The honest ones have my sympathy.
