THE CANADIAN LORDS

MOTION FOR ABOLITION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 1, 12.55 a.m. 1 Ottawa, January 31. A motion seeking the abolition of the Canadian Senate was defeated without division in the House of Commons. During the debate Sir Wilfrid Laurier instanced the Lords' veto in Britain, pointing out that while the Liberals desired to curtail the Lords' powers they had no desire to abolish the House of Lords. An elective Senate would not do, and there were too many elections already. The veto power of the Imperial Parliament would not be a satisfactory substitute for the Senate.
