THE STATES AND CANADA
EFFECT ON IMPERIAL PREFERENCE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 31, 11.10 p.m. London, January 31. The Morning Post protests against the Daily Mail's exaggerated conclusions that the scheme of Imperial preference, whereof Canada was the corner-stone, is dead; and adds that the cause of preference within the Empire may have received a set-back, but its champions are determined to persevere with it as the only practicable means of establishing Imperial Union. The Express declares that the Mail is jettisoning a great cause in an ignoble panic. FRUIT-GROWERS PROTEST. Received 1, 12.55 a.m. Ottawa, January 31. Ontario fruit-growers are organising a monster deputation to Sir Wilfrid Laurier, protesting that reciprocity will ruin the fruit industry.
