ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. Susannah Atkinson, aged 27 years, cui her throat with a razor at her home in Symonds street. Her injuries are serious, but not likely to prove fatal.
TAILOR SHOOTS HIMSELF. Pahiatua, Monday. A sensation was caused in town this morning when it was Ascertained that Francis E. Storey, a tailor in business here, had committed suicide. His body was found at 10 o'clock in the Mangatainoka River with a bullet wound under his right car. He had only his trousers and boots on, and his legs were tied just above the boots. His other clothes were on the hank, and a five-chambered revolver was found in the river close by lus body. One ehambei was empty and the others full. The deceased was last seen early in the morning in town.
BOY DROWNED. Invercargill, Monday. Clarence Wilson), the (seven-year-ola son of George Wilson, storeman, ac cidentally fell into the Mataura River, adjacent to Wyndhnm, at five or Bix o'clock on Sunday evening. The body has been recovered.
SAD BATHING FATALITY. Hamilton, Monday. A sad bathing fatality occurred in Forest Lake this morning on the occasion of the Baptist Sunday School picnic. William Kean, aged 26, with a man named Rushbrook, went for a swim. The latter noticed Kean in difficulties. Kean said he was all right, but shortly afterwards called for help. Rushbrook again went to his assistance, but deceased caught his would-be rescuer by the throat and the latter was obliged to let go, when Kean sank. His body was found twenty minutes later. Rushbrook reached shore with difficulty.
A BODY FOUND. Westport, Monday. The body of a man, supposed to be that of Whittaker (drowned at Inangahua Junction at Christinas time), was found in the Bullcr River many miles from the scene of the accident yesterday afternoon. It was fully dressed and much decomposed. Westport, Last Night.
An inquest touching the death of Wm. Henry Whittaker, whose body was found in a backwash of the Buller River five miles above Westport yesterday, was held to-day. Evidence was given by Jas. Billet to the effect that he and Whittaker were crossing the Inangahua River tributary or Bullcr on Xmas Day, when the boat capsized and Whittaker was drowned, Billet being carried over a mile down the river on the boat, to which he clung and landed on an island, from which he got ashore next day. Mrs. Whittaker gave evidence that deceased belonged to Tasmania, was 43 years ol age, and had a wfe and one child." A verdict of accidental death was returned.
DIED IN A BATH. Nelson, Last Night. Mr. George Chapman, superintendent of the Mental Hospital, died suddenly while having a bath this morning, the cause of death being heart failure. Mr. Chapman had been for many years in the public service, and before coming to Nelson was attached to the staff of the Sunnyside Asylum, Christehurch. He was deeply respected throughout the district, and leaves a widow and three children to mourn his loss.
