TENNi.S Tui'RN'A mv.'AT. THIRD DAY'S PLAY. WALLACE WINS THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
The large attendance at the New Plymouth Club's courts on .Saturday testified to the interest manifested in the game. In contrast to the weather of Friday, the long glad sunsTiine contributed to the harmony. Play was continued without intermission from nine o'clock in the morning until the shades of night enforced a halt. But the final stages in some of the competition?, were not reached, and these will be played to-day. It had previously been considered expedient to delete the combined doubles from the programme, and this competition was not commenced.
The final of the men's championship ! singles, between A. G. Wallace and L. S. Jennings, was won by Wallace, who had played a fine game throughout. The public had had many previous acquaintances with Wallace, and were not slow to recognise his sportsmanlike conduct in play, and the win was a very popular one. The contest was productive of some really good play, in which Wallace's aggressive style wore down his opponent. From the form that Jennings displayed in the initial stages of the tournament, it was generally held that he would be returned the champion, but from the start he appeared nervous, and it was very soon seen that he had no chance, : possibly because he had already played several tiring matches during the day. The only other competition concluded ; was the Men's Handicap Singles, B grade, which was won, after a good game in the final, by Crawshaw.
The tournament will be continued today.
