THE PLUNKET SHIELD. CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. Canterbury met Auckland in the Piunket Shield match to-day, in fine weather, and on a good but .slow wicket. Auckland won the toss, and were at the wickets for the whole afternoon for 341). The batting was on the whole slow, the men playing cautiously to the excellent bowling and the brilliant fielding of the visitors. The first partnership opened well, 108 being scored by Kernus and Anthony before the latter was caught for a well-placed 31). Pearson, the English professional, made 14 in quick time before getting leg-before to Bennett. Sale made a similar number, and then Hemus and Hadden played in partnership, raising the total to 257 before Hemus snicked one from Reese into his wicket, after making 1 1142 by splendid cricket, marred bv two chances, both given before he made 80. Hadden scored a chanceless 01, and was then given out leg before to Reese. The | only other batsman to cause trouble was Horspool, who made 30 by free cricket. CIVIL SERVICE v. NEW PLYMOUTH. An interesting match was played on the Recreation Ground on Saturday between Civil Service and New Plymouth resulting in a win for the former by dG runs. Service batted first, and scored 175, Bain (with 100) being mainly responsible for the total. His was a nice innings, compiled by good cricket, and included 14 fours and two .sixes. Bowles and Sullivan (18 each), and Osborne (14) were useful contributors. Williams, with six wickets for 47 was the most effective bowler. New Plymouth had lost eight wickets for 04, when Goddard became associated with Williams, and, botli batting well, the score ran up to 147 before the latter was caught out after a plucky effort for 48. Goddard added ten more before he lost his partner, and carried his bat for 41, the innings terminating within six minutes of time for 158. Weston (33) and Clark (10) were the only others to reach double figures. Bain was successful with the ball, his figures reading, six wickets for 50. Details:—

Law sustained their first defeat at Tukapa on Saturday, Egmont Village making I3li to their 54. Law went first to the wickets, and commenced fairly well, three wickets being down for 3S. But the tail was weak, and could not add more than Hi, Bewley made 10, Lash 10, and Greatbatrh 17. O'Byrne secured four wickets for eight runs, and Carter five for 30. Egmont Village passed their opponents' score before three wickets fell, and had made over the century with the loss of only four wickets, but the last live wickets made just 31. <). Kinsella had the substantial score of 43, and others who got into double figures were O'Bvrne (17), G. H. Marsh (13), Carter r2l), and Mr. Extras (13).
