WHARF LABORERS' STRIKE
THE MASTERS STAND FIRM. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, January 29.
Wharf laborers on the steamer Marloo and Arawatta struck, demanding fourpence an hour extra for handling cement and superphosphate.
The company granted the extra, but refused to include it in an agreement. Other wharf laborers have joined the strike, and all except the timber vessels are idle.
About COO men are affected by the strike. The men thought that cement and superphosphates were included in the list of special cargoes, for handling which extra payment was made, but when they got the lists they found they were not included. The masters refuse to include them, although paying the increase. Now the masters say they intend to sit back till the men resume.
