At a meeting of the committee of the Manawatu Racing Club, the statement of receipts and expenditure regarding the Christmas meeting was laid on the table, which showed that the profit oi the meeting was £1825 18s 9d, notwithstanding the fact that totalisator taxa-j tion was greatly increased. THE RACING COMMISSION. The Governor has appointed the folfowing as commissioners under the provisions of the Gaming Act for the purpose of determining racing clubs to which totalisator licenses are to be granted in the year comnmeneing August Ist next, and the number of days each of those licenses is entitled to: Sir George Clifford (Christchurch), Mr. Albert Cohen (Dunedin), Mr. J. Rowe (Auckland), Mr. G.P.Donnelly (Hawke's Bay), Mr. R. H. Nolan (Hawera). Sir George Clifford will act as chairman. Their task, says the Times writer, will be far from an enviable one. They will have to decided which clubs are to have totalisator permits and also as to the number of days upon which such permits can be used. As the present number has to be materially reduced it follows that certain clubs are bound to suffer eithejr reduction or extinction, and with the members of such clubs the commissioners are not likely to be very popular. The latter, however, cart be safely trusted to give fearless and impartial consideration to a much-vexed question, and It is to be hoped their work will be of all-round benefit to the sport in the Dominion.
