AMERICAN RECIPROCITY
OPPOSITION DEVELOPING. By Cable—Press Associatiou —Copyright. New York, January 25. Mr. Taft is preparing a message to Congress dealing with Canadian reciprocity. It is stated in Washington that strong opposition is likely to develop against the ratification of the agreement, the principal opponents being New England representatives, who believe their interests are threatened. THE AGREEMENT ANNOUNCED. Received 28, 12.30 a.m. Ottawa, January 27. Mr. Fielding, Minister of Finance, made an announcement in the House of Commons regarding the reciprocity ai'rangement with the United States. Wheat and other grains, dairy products, fresh fruits, fish, eggs, poultry, cattle, sheep and vegetables will be reciprocally free. Canada places on the free lists cotton-seed oil, and the United States free lists will include lumber. Canada removes the restrictions on the exportation of pulpwood, raw materials, and mica, gypsum, etc., arc made free. Rates on secondary food products arc reduced, also on an extensive list of manufactures. Canada lowers her tariff on agricultural machinery.
MR. TAFT'S MESSAGE.
T\ILL CHEAPEN THE COST OF LIVING. Received 28, 12.5 a.m. New York, January 27. President Taft's message to Congress expresses the belief that the reciprocity agreement will materially reduce the cost of living in the United States, and emphasises that the friendship with Canada will be drawn closer by tightening the commercial bonds. Financial gain was not the only result to be desired. "Finally," Mr. Taft says, "Canada has cost us nothing in the way of preparations for defence against her possibje assault, and she never will. She has sought to agree with us quickly when differences have disturbed our relations."
