PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD
At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Parihaka Road iioard there were present —Messrs .1. Young (chairman), Willcox. Deegannnd Harvey. Three tenders were received for the lhaia road contract, but no tender was accepted, as there is to be considerable modification in the work.
I The clerk of the Werekino "Road Board I wrote stating that the rates from that I portion of the Upper Puniho road separj ate accounts arc being spent on enginjeering, etc.; (lovernment grants on Carrington road; that if upper settlers do (not use the lower part of the road, the Road bus to be kept open for them should | they require it, and although the Board was prepared to do anything reasonable, they could not see their way to grant the terms of the request. Juiweora road.—From l'cserves Agent's office: "1. am in receipt of your letter of the.lst inst., asking for payment of £3'.) 14s, amount expended on supervision. I cannot authorise the payment, and think the money should he paid by the settlers who have benefited by the expenditure. It seems only reasonable that they should bear the* cost."—The matter was left in the hands of the clerk Opnsi road.—Petition: ".In view of the very had state of repair of portions of this road, and also of the improbability of the amount at present voted making even the worst parts passable, we, the undersigned,' whilst fully appreciating the said vote, respectfully urge your Board to advance another year's special rate, if required by your foreman, to make the worst parts traffieable."—The Board could not alter their previous decision.
Concession.—The Oaonui Dairy Company asked for permission to carry telephone wire across Kina road. —Granted. Deputation.—Mr. Cross waited on the Board in reference to Opua road, and said he was prepared to pay the four years' special rate on his property at once if the Board would spend the rates immediately on that piece of road from his place to the Main South road. —The Board accepted the offer, and authorised the foreman to spend the money in repairing the road from the creamery to the main road.
The foreman was authorised to inspect Deegan's pit and see if the metal were of any use for repairing. If the metal were good it would be used for repairing the Opua road. The chairman, Mr. Deegan and Mr. Willcox were appointed a sub-committee to inspect the beach stone at the rear of Mr. Deegan's farm, also the access to quantity.
On the motion of Messrs Willcox and Harvey, it was decided that no workover £f> in value be let privately. -
Lower Kahui road. —It was decided that 25 yards of boulders be procured for this road and that it be broken by the county crusher.
In reply to the Egmont County Council's request asking the Parihaka road foreman to prepare the necessary specifications and to supervise the expenditure of the Government grant on Wiremu road, at a cost not exceeding 5 per fent., the Board agreed to undertake the workanil authorised the foreman accordingly.
Mr. D. Mitchell asked the Board to culvert a drain across the Xgariki road opposite his premises.—The Board agreed to find the timber provided the work is done In- Mr. Mitchell.
Accounts totally £785 were passed for payment.—Opunake Times.
