SOUTHLAND WOOL SALE. By Telegraph.—Press Association, lnvercargill Last Night. The second wool sale of the series was held to-day. The total bales offered were 13,738, of which 3,196 were passed. The greater part of the withdrawn lota were station clips, the owners of which expressed their determination to consign to London rather than accept the reduced prices offered here. Americans were not represented. Southland buyers were actively concerned in maintaining a better price than would hav<* otherwise been current. Crossbred wool formed the greater part of the catalogues, and with an average drop of a penny per lb, as compared with last month, growers had to be content with about 3d per lb less than in January. The lack of American competition had a decided bearing on these results, more particularly with regard to hogget wool. At no time was competition verv animated, except for the better lots. .Bellies ami pieces, which were a feature of last month's sale, dropped unite 2d per lb. Hogget wool averaged B%d to fli/.d; extra good up to lld ; live wool averaged 7%d to B>/,ci, a few lots up to 10% d, with inferior ranging down to sd. Inferior wools suffered the greatest drop. In finer grade wools as against the top price of 13i/i,d last. January, ll'/.d was the best price to-day. Growers are rather downcast at the result of the sale. The quality was not so good as last year, the fleeces being earthy and the station clips infested with biddybids; through the weed having ripened curlier than in previous years.
