THE DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA
SYDNEY WANTS MORE RIFLES. DEPUTATION TO LORD MAYOR. By Cable-Press Association-Copyright. Received 23, 10.10 p.m. Sydney, January 23. A deputation representing the British Immigration League and a number' of leading citizens asked the Lord Mayor to convene a public meeting to discuss the necessity for completing the defence system, and particularly for increasing the supply of rifles and ammunition. The deputation said it had no desire to embarrass the Commonwealth Government, but assured the Government that any action to expedite the organisation of the defence would receive the united support of citizens.
The critical state of European politics was used as one argument for the need of Australia to be prepared. The statement was made that there was no ammunition for the few reserve rifles the country possessed. The Lord Mayor promised consideration, but advised the deputation to see Mr. Fisher, the Federal Premier.
