LORD ISLINGTON'S VISIT
THE PUBLIC GARDEN PARTY.
Arrangements are now well forward for the monster garden party and public welcome to His Excellency the Governor, Lord Islington, in the Recreatioa. Sports Ground next Thursday. His Excellency will probably arrive on Wednetday evening, and on Thursday morning will visit the petroleum works and other points of interest, and unveil the South African war memorial on Marsland Hill at noon. Later he will be publicly welcorned by His Worshiy the Mayor in the Sports Ground, where he will be presented with an address. The Garrison Band, the Territorials, Scouts, and veterans will take part in the official function. A splendid programme has been arranged, including a floral fete that ■ promises to eclipse anything of the kind hitherto attempted in New Plymouth. The decoration of motor-cars, go-carts, bicycles, etc., has been taken up enthusiastically, and large entries are pre ' ' mised that should uphold New Plymouth's reputation as the Garden of New Zealand. It is to be hoped that everyone who has flowers and to spare ' will take an interest in the function, and assist by decorating entries. Th» prizes are well worth competing for, and ' will more than repay the cost of decora- ' tions. An additional item has been included by request for children's decorated dolls' carts and Bhould cause keen competition. A couple of cycle races add variety to the programme, which will probably also include events by the Scouts. Innumerable side-shows should provide plenty of amusement in lighter vein, while children's races, boating on the lake, motor-car rides, etc., will >eep the children busy. The afternoon tea booths, lolly stalls, etc., have bean " taken charge of by a strong ladies' committee. Altogether there is every promise that the function will be one 1 worthy of the occasion, but the commit- '■ tee is relying on a large measure of public support in entries for the - floral display, which it is hoped to make an '«■' attractive and imposing one. .'.;■
