A BISHOP PROTESTS
AGAINST THE .MARRIAGE LAWS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, January 20. The Bishop of London recently wrote to llr. Tristram, K.C., the Chancellor of the diocese, objecting to the latter issuing marriage licenses In his own name, and instructing the Chancellor that no license for a marriage with a divorced person or of a person with his deceased's wife's sister was to be issued withoilt the Bishop's personal assent in writing.
The Bishop's action arose out of the marriage of Mrs. Pretty, nt the Chapel, Savoy. Mrs. Pretty had secured a decree nisi against her husband, but had given cause to ,the King's Proctor to intervene, though his intervention was put aside by the judge, and the decree declared absolute.
Mr. Tristram has replied to the Bishop that lie is bound to observe the law of the kingdom, fven when it is at variance with a prelate's opinion.
