DUTCH DEFENCES
DEBATE IN THE FRENCH CHAMBER. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 20, 9.55 p.m. Paris, January 20.
The Journal debate hag commenced. Regarding the proposed fortification of Flushing, tue Journal states that Dutch defences are exclusively designed against attack by sea, in other words, on the theory that one Power alone, namely, Great Britain, is a possible aggressor. It adds: M. Pichon's statement claimed that those guaranteeing Belgium's neutrality were entitled to exchange views and adopt precautions in the event of the fortification of Flushing, and thus prevent being taken by surprise if Belgium appealed for the fulfilment of the (iuarantee. No menace to Holland's independence was ever intended.
Le Temps declares 'that Holland has nothing to fear from Britain in the event of a Kuropean war if she is not bound to Germany, but if she takes advantage of the Powers' divergent views, and executes the scheme, she will thereby notify in the plainest possible manner that she has joined the Triple Alliance.
