DAMAGES FOR LIBEL. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received '2O, 5.5 p.m. London, January 19. P. C. Simmons, who was a candidate for St. George's-in-the-East seat at the January election, and who recently obtained £3OOO damages from the Daily Chronicle, has also obtained a verdict for £SOOO against the Newspaper Company Liberal Opinion, Ltd., the ground for action being that the defendant issued election leaflets containing libellous matter. Mr. Justice Darling said he agreed with the jury as to the advisability of plaintiffs in such cases in future instituting criminal proceedings. RECOUNTS GRANTED. Received 21, I a.m. London, January 20. Recounts have been granted at West St. Prancas and West Bromwich.
