HEAVY DAMAGE BY FIRE

NO EFFICIENT APPLIANCES. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, January 20. A fire at Coraki destroyed a large portion of the main street. It started in the centre of a large block of buildings, and spread with tremendous rapidity both ways. There were no efficient lirefighting appliances. The places burned include two hotels, the London Bank of Australia and several large business premises. There are few details, but the damage is many thousands of pounds. ONLY A BUCKET FIRE BRIGADE. FROM £20,000 TO £40,000 DAMAGE. Received 21, 12.40 a.m. Sydney, January 20! The Coraki fire broke out at three o'clock in the morning at the rear of Stokes and Priddices, tailors, in the main street. The fire demolished the whole block, except a corner store. Most of the buildings were new, and the Commercial Hotel was one. of the best on the north coast. Altogether twelve buildings were totally destroyed. The fire had to be fought with buckets of water from the river. The wind dropping prevented further disastrous spread. The damage is variously estimated nt from £20,000 to £40,000, and is believed to be covered by insurance.
