ACTIVITY IN EGYPT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright London, January IS. The Shell Transport and Oil Compaqis negotiating for the acquisition of the Gemsah oilfield in Egypt, and intends to erect a refinery at Suez and to lay a pipe line from Gemsah to Suez.
Amongst the visitors to the Taranaki company's bores yesterday morning were Messrs."T. Ronayne (General Manager of Railways), T. "Buxton (Chief Traffic Manager), J. Burnett (Chief Engineer), A. L. Beattie (Chief Mechanical Engineer), F. Jones (District Etagineer), and Mr. F. P. Corkill, who were accompanied by Mr. C. Carter, chairman of directors. " The railway party had very little time, they said, but the ten minutes to which they proposed to limit the visit stretched to about half .an hour, so interested were they in the splendid flow of oil and in the vast stores of petroleum accumulated in the tanks. Another visitor who made very exhaustive enquiries was Mr. G. R. Croll, engineer for Messrs. Borthwiok, Ltd., who spent two days there, with the object of getting information with a view to the introduction of oil fuel at the company's works. In connection with the Taranaki Petroleum company's application for the Government bonus of £2500 (first portion). Mr. L. Sladden, of Messrs Sladden and Palmer, was at the works yesterday, and measured the quantities of oil now stored in the tanks. Oil was flowing well at lmth No. 2 and No. 3 bores yesterday. Drilling continues at No. 5.
