GENERAL TELEGRAMS

LIQUOR IX NO-LICENSE AREA. .By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. A police raid was made to-night on premises in Gore occupied by George Thurston, and a quantity of liquor was found buried in the yard adjoining the house.

THE MIDLAND RAILWAY. Christchurch, Last Night At the departmental enquiry by Mr. W. S. .Short into complaints of co-opera-tive workers on the Midland railway, it was alleged that 8s per day was insufficient for a married man with a family, owing to the dearness of necessaries and loss of time due to wet weather. Mr. Short said that after a careful scrutiny of pay sheets from May to December last, he found from 26 to 28 days were lost, which he considered not very great when the climate was taken into account, and not much more than would be lost in any other part of the Dominion. He added that he found the average wage on the Midland railway ranged from a little over 7s Id to something over 8s Gd per day. The question of rate of pay was one that really he did not have anything to do with. It was for the Minister to decide whether the rate should be altered. Mr. Short made investigations into a number of other complaints, and in the majority of cases arranged for their adjustment.
