Mr. Fisher states that Australia tan yet negotiate with Canada for a mail service from Australia to Vancouver. SPEECH BY SIR JOSEPH WARD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. Sir Joseph Ward arrived here by special train, in company with His Excellency the Governor, about 5 p.m. to-day. At 7.15 p.m. he ollieially opened the new Post Office at St. Kilda. tin the course of his remarks, he referred to the Vancouver mail service, and said he had received the following cable from Sir Wilfrid Laurier: "Have informed Sir James Mills that Canada will close a contract with him for a period of five years, Honolulu, Suva, Auckland, for the present contribution, to Canada, plus Fiji and New Zealand contribution. Canada will reserve the right to require contractor to proceed to Sydney or Melbourne, or both." The. contract would be confirmed with the Union Company in the course of a few days, if Australia came in later on with a contribution. New Zealand would be only too glad to bo associated 1 with the Commonwealth in the matter. Sir J. G. Ward was subsequently entertained at a banquet at St. Kilda. He will leave for Christchurch tomorrow.
