BOROUGH COUNCIL
OFFICIAL REPORTS. The following reports will be considi eral at the usual meeting of the borough council to be held this evening:— WORKS COMMITTEE. That the recommendation of the borough engineer that the storni-watci from Liardet, Gilbert and Fillis streets should be dealt with by carrying ii along Gilbert street to the Pukckura stream be given effect to as soon as possible, the matter being one of urgency, and that in the meantime the borough engineer report as to the best means of giving effect to his recommendations and the estimated cost of the work; that the council contribute the sum of £25 to the controlling authority of the New Plymouth Technical School, for the purpose of increasing the efficiency ot Technical Classes formed under part 7 of the Education Act, 1908; the question of permitting the borough solicitors to appear for the defendant in an action by the police for breach of a .borough by-law, was left in the hands of His Worship the Mayor with power to act; His Worship the Mayor was requested to invite His Excellency the Governor to pay an official visit to New Plymouth in the last week of January; that His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Bellringer, Browne and Wilson be appointed a committee to confer with tile county council with reference to the proposed bridge over the Henui River at the Avenue road; that the Noxious Weeds Inspector be informed that the borough engineer is already attending to the eradication of noxious weeds from the old waterworks reserve east of this Henui stream; that the borough engineer be instructed to divide the express hire amongst the different carriers, engaging an express from the express stand, if one is available, when required; that the borough engineer be instructed to furnish a return showing the amount paid for express hire and cartage during the past year; that Dr. Whitton's application for concrete kerb and channelling be referred to next year's Estimates Committee for favorable consideration; that Mr. Coleman's application for permission to construct a septic tank at Mr. May's property be deferred until next meeting of the Works Committee, and that in the meantime he be requested to furnish a plan showing how the effluent will be dealt with; that his Worship the Mayor be appointed the council's delegate at the conference to fix the weekly halfholiday for shops for the ensuing year; that the borough engineer be authorised to lower the water main in Morley street as recommended by him;! that the borough engineer submit an estimate of the cost of covering in the crusher; that the account against Mr. Hartnell for extension of water mam in Holdsworthy road be referred to the borough engineer to adjust in the manner suggested by" the committee; that the programme of the arrangements in connection with the visit of his Excellency the Governor as drawn up at the representative meeting on the 9th inst. be approved, and that the text of the proposed address as submitted by the lown clerk be approved; that the following report of the Executive Committee be adopted: (1) The borough engineer was instructed that if in his opinion the work could be safely proceeded with, as much of the earth as possible from the Good Templars' section should be deposited in Powderliam street and the balance utilised in making up any footpath in the vicinity requiring attention; (2) the borough engineer was instructed to notify the Good Templars in writing that unless the boundary pegs were putin immediately work would be discontinued; (Ii) the borough engineer was also instructed to attend to the sewer manholes where necessary; that Mr. J. Bruce be informed that no funds are available at present for the extension of the sewers, but that in the event of the proposed drainage loan being approved by the ratepayers the sewers in Bulteel street will be extended as requested by him. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. That the time for receiving tenders for the electric light plant be extended for one month; the committee instructed that a telegram be sent to Mr. Climie, consulting engineer, regretting the delay in the preparation of the plans and specifications of the fore-bay, anrt asking him to expedite matters; the electrical engineer was granted a week's extension of leave. RESERVES COMMITTEE.
That the sexton report the names ol all overgrown and untidy plots in the cemetery, with a view to notices being served on the owners, requiring them to put the plots in order; that Mr. W. Banks be granted the grazing rights' until March 31 next of the portion of Mount Bryan reserve formerly leased to the late Mr. Lealand at the rate ol £3 per annum; that Mr. Sangster be informed that the council cannot see its way to accept his offer with reference to a new lease of his sections at Ngaere reserve. ABATTOIR COMMITTEE. That the .borough engineer be instructed to put all the fences in good order, using the best wire obtainable; that the boundary fence of No 1 paddock for a distance of about three chains from the south-east corner be constructed of posts and rails and raised to a satisfactory level; that the borough engineer be instructed to pave the branding pen in 'an efficient manner at an estimated cost of £5.
