TIMJSEK SCOW STRANDED. 'By Teli'jrv.iph. —I'ress Association. Viewport, Saturday. When the scow Zingara was being towed out of Karamea there was a slight swell on the bar and a fresh breeze. The ves-el took the ground on the north spit. To prevent the steamer Mangapapa being also dragged ashore, Captain Fletcher cut the tow rope. The Mangapapa returned from Westport to Karamea last night with new gear, with the object of getting a line aboard the stranded vessel. The Zingara is owned in Sydney, and is probably uninsured. She has 100.000 feet of timber aboard. STRAIGHTENING THEM UP. Wellington, Saturday. Four seamen on the steamer Kaipara, named Thimias liidont. Manuel Enandes, Arthur King, and Tempest Steen, were charged at the Police Court today with wilful disobedience of the lawful command of the chief officer on the run down from Auckland. While at Auckland these men left the ship and were arrested and sentenced to three days' imprisonment. One of the duties they refused to perform was to keep a look-out, with the result tlmt the voyage down was made without a lookout. The heaviest possible penalty was asked for by the prosecution, which emphasised the seriousness of the offences. Counsel for the defence said the men regretted their action and promised to faithfully serve the company if they were returned to the ship. The Magistrate said there was nothing in accuseds' favor; the fact that they risked their own lives as well as those ol others on board was no palliation. Each of the accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment.
