THE FLORAL FETE. (wrom Our Own Correspondent.) The floral fete on Thursday in connection with the Fire Brigade was a huge success, and those ladies responsible for the arduous work connected therewith are deserving of the highest praise. No doubt tnc fact of the enjoyable time spent by patrons will amply repay, the committee for tiheir labors. The organisation under the Mayoress (Mrs. Jenkins), ably assisted by OUfsdamcs Harrison, McKoy, McDonnell, Brabant, G. S. Andrews, A. Andrews, Ashton, Ford, Peek, Spurdle, Skelton, Murgjatroyd, Langman and Old, with Misses Jenkins, Elliot and A. Johnson, was excellent. Mesdames Skinner, Martin and Clarke judged the floral entries, and gave general satisfaction. Considering the time of year the floral decorations were most satisfactory, although a number of entries made did not put in an appearance on the day. Captain Mitchell's coster turnout created a lot of fun. One of the features of the procession, which was not so big as has been seen here| on occasions,, was a "Sunflower Drive," arranged by Mrs. L. B. Grimstone. Six cupids, gaily decorated, and driven by Miss Zoey Grimstone, and headed by Master Trevor Badley as marshal, made a pretty sight. A '"hobble skirt" brigade of some ten girls created a lot of fun. Mrs. Passau's matypole dancers were a source of attraction at each performance. Master Murgatroyd and three other lads carried a decorated floral banner, which was a very creditable exhibit. Mr. D. George ably supervised the bicycle races, three of which were won by E. S'toadart, and one by J. Adlam. The fun was kept going along merrily all the afternoon with various sports, a great portion of which was for the young fry, who had a glorious time. In* the evening, under the electric light, the fete was continued much in the same direction as during the day. There must have • been quite 700 people on the ground. When all returns are in there should be some £7O gross, leaving between £SO and £CO net —not a bad return for the day's work. Tlie following is the prize list:-

Gigs: Mrs. McGuinness 1, Mr. Birdling 2. Also competed, Miss May Sole. The placed gigs used hydrangea in the decoration, and Miss Solo yellow lupins. A burlesqaie exhibit was Oapt. Mitchell's "darkey" cart, and with this the party created a lot of merriment. Ponies: Master Skelton L, Miss E. Jones 2, Bicycles: Mrs. E. Jones 1, Miss P. Clarke 2. Other competitors, Misses Cato and Bullot Baby's Push Carts: Miss Constance Kempsall and Waverley Bould tied for first. Dojjs: Mrs. Allen 1, Mr. Old and Dr. Raniagc tied for second prize. Tricycles: Master Ashton 1, Master Limmer 2. Also competed, Masters Harrison, L. Farmer and T. Burgess. Go-carts: Mrs. R. Muschamp first and special mention. Wheelbarrows: Mrs. Reeee 1. Children's Prams: Miss A. Hoskin 1, Miss B. Thomas 2. Boy's Tov Horses: Master B. Jenkins I', Master D. Tel far 2. The Railway Department has been good enough to grant the Borough Council, for the use of the Fire Brigade, a site opposite the Council Chambers at a peppercorn rental. The spot is an ideal one for the purpose, and the Brigade is grateful for the concession. Messrs. W. J<\ Jenkins (Mayor), F. J. Brabant (councillor) and the Town Clerk left for Wanganui this morning in connection with the water supply settlement. The Municipal Band's assistance at the floral fete on Thursday was appreciated by the Brigade, and their music delighted the many people present. Strangers could hardly credit the fact that the Bond was purely local. The. Fire Brigade has booked St. John's Hall for Coronation Night, June 23, for the purpose of holding a big ball. On Thursday week the Band intends to hold a gathering on the Camp Reserve, and no doubt, as the public received good value for their money on Thursday, they will roll up in good force to assist on this occasion.

Judging by the fact that some £27 was spent on the ground alone at the lloral fete on Thursday, there is no scarcity of money in this district. The following will represent Waitara Bowling Club against th« Ingle wood Club at Inglewood on Thursday next: —Russell, Langman, Eraser, Andrew; Foreman, Eiittenbury, C. Sampson, Wyllie; G. Nosworthy, Klenner, Ford, Bcekbessingcr; W. 11. Nosworthy, Gilbert, Grimstone, W. .Sampson. Emergencies: Cal<ler, Buchanan, llellier, Bent. "Colts" rink: Jenkins, L. Sampson, Tulford, Knuckey.
