LORD ISLINGTON

VISIT TO SOUTHLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. His Excellency the Governor arrived in Invercnrgill, and was welcomed by the Mayor and councillors on Thursday evening. On Friday he visited the Bluff and Stewart Island, returning to town in the evening, and on Saturday morn ing he visited Riverton and Winton. During the afternoon, His Excellency, in the presence of a large crowd, performed the ceremony of turning the first sod of the Invercargill tramways, for which a loan of £75,000 has been llouted. In the evening he was entertained at a public conversazione, and remained in Invercargill to-day. To-morrow morning he will proceed to Dunedin, visiting en route Mataura and Gore. At Invercnrgill, Bluff, Stewau Island, Riverton and Winton he was presented with addresses of welcome. Though the visit was only a Hying one. Lord Islington stated in liis speeches that he had seen enough to realise the great fertility and prosperity of Southland.
