A HEAVY DOWNPOUR. By Coble.—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, January 13. The rain continued throughout the night, and at 9 o'clock eight inches had been recorded in 21 hours. GASHOLDER CAPSIZED. Sydney, January 13. During yesterday's storm the wind attained' a velocity of 53 miles an hour. Shipping in the harbor was inconvenienced, and many buildings were unroofed. At Orange the gasholders, full of gas, were blown over; and the town is depending upon a small and inadequate holder for its supply.

FLOODS REPORTED. Sydney, January 13. The rain is abating. The cataract of the reservoir overflowed for the first time since it was built. • Several country stations report floods. STORM BLOWS ITSELF OUT. Received 13, 9.20 p.m. Sydney, January 13. The storm has blown itself out. The rain also has ceased.. The flood waters caused- considerable damage in the lowlying suburbs. The gale was responsible for a fair amount of havoc to buildings, fences and trees round the city and country.

Some phenomenal rainfalls are recorded. At Nowra, for instance, over thirteen inches of rain fell. The latest reports show that the Nepean, Hawkesbury and other coastal rivers, where heavy floods were threatened, are receding. Arriving vessels report having a rough time during the gale. CROPS INUNDATED. RAILWAY BRIDGE WASHED AWAY. ! Received 13, 11.40 p.m. Sydney, January 13. The Hawkesbury river rose 27 feet above the summer level, and the water was several feet above the flooring of the bridges. A wide airea of crops was inundated, and some residents were forced to leave their homes. Considerable damage was done along the Nepean valley. The railway, bridge nt Warialda. w«is washed away. Reports from country districts are meagre, owing to telegraphic interruptions, but it is believed the northern river districts suffered a good deal.
