OBITUARY
We have to record the death of Lieut.Colonel Henry George Payne, V.D. which occurred at the residence of his sister (Mrs. J. C. Davies) at Bonithon, on Tuesday morning. Deceased had in the past been a very enthusiastic volunteer, and about twelve months ago was presented at a battalion parade held in New Plymouth with the Volunteer Decoration in recognition of distinguished services, he having served for 34 years in A Battery, New Zealand Artillery, headquarters, Auckland. Col. Payne came to the Taranaki district some years ago, and has had several years in business in Stratford and recently at Eltham up to the present time. Deceased, on account of ill-health, recently came to New Plymouth for treatment, but his case has been hopeless. There will not be a military funeral accorded, although deceased's rank entitles him to a firing party of a whole battalion. Deceased's relatives desire a private interment.
