The Commercial Agent in the East reports that the new Japanases tariff, which comes into force on July Ist, practically prohibits the importation of foreign goods, therefore there is an active demand for cargo steamers or old passenger or cargo boats, provided the latter are suitable for breaking up.
EARTHQUAKE RECORDED. Received 5, 12.20 a.m. New York, January 4. A great earthquake was seismographed at Kansas University. It believed that the centre of the disturbance was in Chili or Iceland.
BUTCHERS RE-OPEN. , Received 5, 12.20 a.m. Vienna, January 4. The authorities at Trieste compelled the butchers to re-open.
INTERNATIONAL TELEGRAPH UNION. Received 5, 12.20 a.m. Berne, January 4. The Federal Council invites the artists of the world to compete in designing a monument to commemorate the foundation of the International Telegraph Union, the prizes being 20,000 francs. The competition will be open till August 15.
