THE DEFENCE FORCES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In an interview with a New Zealand Times reporter the Premier, Sir Joseph Ward, said he had to-day given instructions for the preparation of the register of those eligible to serve in the general' training section. The preparation of the roll will be carried out principally by area officers, and should not be a lengthy undertaking. The compulsory element had been well received, but he could not say how far these provisions would require to be put into operation to secure 39,800 fully-trained men, who will be turned out as the result of the five years' operations. Asked whether the Government would attempt to deal with insurance against unemployment, Sir Joseph replied that it was exceedingly difficult to bring about a workable scheme, as there is no definite basis. He would not care to bring up a scheme which* promised much but did nothing, but he was closely watching the British Government's efforts in connection with the problem..
