The Defence Department estimates that 100,000 senior cadets will commence training under the new scheme on July 1. DEATHS IN A MINE. Melbourne, December 28. Fatalities from black damp occurred at the Wallsend Proprietary colliery, Westralia. A party of seven were engaged in inspecting, when black damp rose from a fire in old workings, and five of the party collapsed. The other two dragged them to safety, but Baird, ■underground boss, and Hann, deputy underground boss, died.
