PARK TENNIS CLUB

THE FUNCTION AT "OVERADLE." I The ladies of the newly-formed tennis I and croquet club were not fortunate ia-| the matter of weather for their garden party at "Overdale" yesterday afternoon. Wednesday gave excellent promise, butduring the night rain came, and there was a heavy fall just after daybreak. Then the weather cleared, only to" return •once more to the rainy stage at about [ eleven o'clock, by which time the ladies | had their pretty little stalls and Xmas : trees decorated. Fearful of another j shower—for this one was very "solid"— i the Xmas trees were dismantled, and I stalls fixed on the verandahs. But noI thing could be done to reassure the pubI lie, and the clouds hanging about severely militated against the attendance, i which was confidently expected to be large. Mr. and 'Mrs. Cock, who had placed the house and grounds at the disposal of the club, worked hard throughout, as did the following, stallholders: Fancy stalls, Mrs. C. M. Hill, Misses Putt, T. Okey and E. Smith; gipsy tent, Mrs. F. E. Clarke; ice creams, Mrs. M. E'udd and Misses Dowling and Hammond; sweets,' Mrs. F. C. Tribe, Misses Putt and Fenton. The afternoon jtea department was in the hands of Mesdames Cock, Tisch, Dowling, Scanlion, Staples, Misses Putt, Doile, Dowling i and Hatcher, and it was a very busy place. The little Misses Doreen Healy and Angela Wright did thriving business with a penny bran-tub dip, and Misses I. Gilbert, J. Elliott, M. Okey and Sin- < clair worked the guessing competitions.! Messrs. R. Deare and E. Gilmour had' tooting silver mines in the shape of motor-cars, and ran smart trips all the afternoon. Owing to the weather only four of the 'decorated vehicles came forward, but everyone was beautifully dressed with flowers. The first and second prizes in the doll's cart event (gold brooches presented by Messrs. J. Bennett and W. Roberts), were won by Misses Ailsa Ewing and Hope Asher, Miss Marjorie Smart being third. Mrs. Wells' was the only go-cart, and won a gold ' brooch (Mr. Greiner's prize). Prizes for ' the guessing competitions were presented 1 by Messrs. Arch Clark and Sons and Messrs. Sargood, Son and Ewen. These 1 were won by Mrs. Paton and Mr. W. Pellew. The music f6r the afternoon was ■ provided by the Rev. A. M. Bradbury, ' Dr. Leatham, and Mr. R. N. Renaud on the Steck pianola and Hopkinson piano > lent 'by Mr. Hoffmann, and the Edison 1 phonograph*" from Mr. C. Carter's. The ; proceeds—which are to be devoted to the '■ erection of a pavilion, now being built by Mr. F. W. Sandford and other club i members—were very satisfactory. Mrs. . Cock was the president, Miss E. T. Okey • the secretary, and Miss Hammond the , treasurer, of the ladies' committee.
