MINING
MILLS' REWARD COMPANY. Following is the report received from the mine manager at Coromandel, dated December 10: — Since my last report I have had two men driving on the big ree%at the No. 2 level, and they have driven 18 feet for the fortnight. This makes a total distance of 43 feet from the crosscut, and the reef maintains its size (abous 2 feet wide). The country for the last 6 feet has been broken on account of a slide coming across the face at a long angle, but is improving ahead of the break. The ore is low grade. Moturoa Section. —Two men are working on this reef, and have driven 13 feet for the past fortnight. The country is very tough, but a good description for carrying gold. Owing to the hanging wall portion underlying very much, we have not been able to keep the two walls in hand, therefore we have to keep on the footwall portion only. , Colors and dabs of gold can be seen at each breaking down, the reef varying in size, and running about north west and south west and underlying to the north west. The mineral indications here are favorable for gold, and I anticipate better results as we proceed into the hi-fi or solid ground. While prospecting this morning, I came across a nice lead showing gold freely on the surface near the Moturoa reef, but I cannot say much about it until Ido some more work on it. However, it is very encouraging to see gold in the stone. The lead is small on the surface, but the indications are that it will get larger at a depth.
