PRISONERS ESCAPE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, Last Night. Alfred Pryor and Wm. Newton, serving six and two and a lialf years' re speetively for jewellery robberies a« Greymouth, escaped from the lock-up at 7.35 p.m. last night. The police search up to the present has proved abortive, but a report has been received stating that two men answering their description were seen at Teramakau at midday to-day.
STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. Wellington, Last Night. Dunedin, Last Night. At Tapanui on Saturday, lightning struck three large, pines in a plantation on the Brooksdale estate, splitting the trees from top to bottom. Sheep were under them, sheltering, five ewes under the largest tree being killed by lightning, and another ten feet away was also killed. At Tuturau on Saturday, a girl named Hannah and a youth named Aitken were struck by lightning while taking shelter in a barn. The former has recovered, but the latter has not quite recovered yet.
