THE HOUNDSDITCH BURGLARY
THE JEWEL ROBBERY SENSATION. By Cable— Press Association—Copyright. London, December 18. The persons arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the murder of policemen at Houndsditch have been released except the woman who was identified as having rented the house adjoining the jeweller's shop.
SUGGESTION TO ARM THE POLICE. Received 19, 9.15 p.m. London, December 19. The Houndsditch burglary, caused a sensation in London. One newspaper suggests arming, the police, as the guardians of property. They are now helpless targets for burglars' shots. THE MODUS OPERANDI. Received 10, 10.40 p.m. London, December 19. The blowpipes for oxygen which were abandoned at Houndsditch were similar to those used in the burglary of Wriglit and Hodgfciss' premises at Birmingham. THE POPULACE .STIRRED. NIHILIST LITERATURE FOUND. Received 19, 11 p.m. London, December 19. Goldstein, alias Levi, rented the house at Houndsditch. The burglars handled automatic pistols, which are far deadlier than ordinary revolvers. Arms, ammunition and Nihilist literature were found in the Goldstein's domicile. Selinska remains in custody. S'he was urged by a female friend, who disappeared when Goldstein bought the domicile, to burn all documents, and she obeyed. She declines to make a statement, and remarked through an interpreter: "Those who have done wrong will get me out of this. Otherwise I won't say who they are. I will put up with all." An eyewitness states that one of the assassins fired four shots at a policeman, until the latter fell. Another woman has been arrested.
The newspapers pay splendid tributes to all the police victims for their inflexible courage in endeavoring to enter after the first shots. The honest enforcement of the Aliens Act is demanded. The Times states that the unarmed condition of the police must immediately impress itself upon the public, who are excited, grieved and indignant at this murderous outrage in the heart of London. The regular criminal has no grudge against the police, whom they regard as doing only their duty, arid as a fair match against nimhleness; whereas the savage delight of taking life is a mark of the modern Continental Anarchist criminal.
