FIVE POLICEMEN SHOT
BURGLARS' TRAPPED AND DESPERATE.
By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. Received 18, 5.5 p.m. London. December IS. When attempting to arrest burglars in a jeweller's shop at Houndsditch, the police surrounded the house. Realising they were trapped, the burglars opened the door and rushed out. Five policemen were shot, and two died. The burglars escaped. A DARING BURGLARY PROJECT. EIGHT RUSSIANS ARRESTED. Received 19, 12.55 a.m. London, December 18. The Houndsditch burglars included a woman, who rented the house adjoining the jewellers', where the safe contained £20,000 worth of jewels. They attempted to perforate the wall. They abandoned their tools, blowpipes and dynamite. A third constable has 1 succumbed. Goldstein, a Russian Pole, one of the assailants was found dying of a revolver wound, supposed to be accidentally inflicted. He succumbed at his domicile in Wliiteehapel. Seinslka, a Russian woman wfho was nursing Goldstein, has been identified' as the burglars' female companion. Five men and three women, all Russians, have been arrested.
