TARANAKI SCHOLARSHIPS

A VALUABLE ENDOWMENT. At the break-up of the High School yesterday, Mr. Okey, M.P., referred to the Tarahaki scholarships. He said that the matter had cropped up during the session. He was pleased to find that at least one scholarship had been secured by a pupil of the High School. It struck him in dealing with the question that they did not take full advantage of the scholarship. He found that the sum of £BOOO was in the hands of the Public Trustee, and that whereas it should have gone towards the education (in scholarships) of the children in Taranaki district, it had not been taken advantage of. He was pleased to have the opportunity of placing this matter not only before their school but before other high schools in Taranaki. In a few years there was no reason why from £ - 2<»i' to .-€2500 should not be in credit towards this scholarship. The land was let now at a very small rental, and as that increased the accumulation would grow, but at present they were not able to take advantage of it and send scholars to Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland, or other colleges. The scholarship gave everyone a chance, and each sohpol should be able to send one scholar. The Act required amending in this direction, so that the school could send more th«B one scholar. (Applause.) The Governors of Victoria College wanted that £BOOO, but he did not want it taken away from the purpose for which it was givflh They should take advantage of the e-rous offer of the Legislature—in which their own members, the Hons. T. Kellv and Oliver Samuel, had done their part —in nuking provision for higher education. He was very sorry that it should be suggested by Mr. Herdman that Victoria College should be given a chance to get the money, and he had done all that lav in his power to resist this going through. (Hear, hear.) He could not allow the occasion to pass without drawins the attention of parents to the provision that had been made for the higher education of their children. Mr/Okey eoncluded by stating that he was sure Mr. Pridham would provide all the requirements necessary to obtain the scholarships, and hoped he would be able to them on having gained the places. (Applause.)
