It is understood in well-informed circles that iMr. A. R. McVilly will shortly be appointed general manager of railways. The Earl of Minto, formerly GovernorGeneral of Canada and Viceroy of India, has been created a Knight of the Garter. —Press cablegram. The Xelson Education Board has appointed Mr. C. J. Cockburn, of the Auckland Technical College, to the position of art instructor at the Nelson Technical School. There were fourteen applications from various parts of the Dominion.—Press message. In appreciation of her work done during her term of four years' pupil teachership at the West End School, Miss McIsaac was yesterday presented with a volume of poems. Mrs. Dowling (headmistress) referred to the willing and kindly way Miss Mclsaac had always carried out her duties. Mr. Tisch niado the presentation. For the position of chief engineer on the Harbor Board's dredge Paritutu, Mr. T. B. J. Sinclair, late of the Government steamer Tutenakai and the aunboat Sparrow, has been selected, while to the vacancy of the second engineership Mr. R. J. Sutcliffe, engineer at the Hastings freezing Works, and formerly second engineer on R.M.S. Turakina, has been appointed. At the West End break-up ceremony yesterday His Worship the Mavor (Mr. G. Tisch, chairman) made the following presentations: Mrs. Dowling (on behalf of the Sixth Standard scholars), a handsome silver-plated butter-dish; Miss Mynott (on behalf of the parents of the first, second and third primers), a beau-, tiful silver-backed hairbrush and comb,' and serviette ring; and, on behalf of their respective classes, to Miss Westrupp, an exquisite silver-plated inkstand, and to Messrs. Bary and Mackay volumes of poetical works.
