It is understood in well-informed circles that iMr. A. R. McVilly will shortly be appointed general manager of railways. For the position of chief engineer on the Harbor Board's dredge Paritutu, Mr. T. B. J. Sutcliffe, engineer at the Hastings freezing Works, and formerly second engineer on R.M.S. Turakina, has been appointed. At the West End break-up ceremony yesterday His Worship the Mavor (Mr. G. Tisch, chairman) made the following presentations: Mrs. Dowling (on behalf of the Sixth Standard scholars), a handsome silver-plated butter-dish; Miss Mynott (on behalf of the parents of the first, second and third primers), a beau-, tiful silver-backed hairbrush and comb,' and serviette ring; and, on behalf of their respective classes, to Miss Westrupp, an exquisite silver-plated inkstand, and to Messrs. Bary and Mackay volumes of poetical works.
