Mr. James P. Kalanger, headmaster of the Winchester School, South Canterbury, has 'been appointed instructor of ! agriculture to the Auckland Education Board. ' The Most Eev. William Alexander, D.D., Archbishop of Armagh, and Pri--1 mate of All Ireland .(Church of Ireland) since 1896, has resigned, owing to 1 ill-health, announces a London cablegram. i The Rev. P. B. Fraser, having accepted the position of superintendent of the Home Missions with the Presbyterian ; Assembly, resigns his seat on the Otago [ Education Board. He intends to settle i in the North Island. , The Otago Education Board has I granted ex-Inspector Goyen twelve ', months' leave, and appointed Mr'. Rich-. | ardson chief inspector, and Mr. Park , permanent secretary. An additional inspector is to be appointed at a salary of ' £350 a year, plus travelling allowances. > Mrs. Thacker, one of the oldest set- ' tiers of Okain's Bay, Banks Peninsula, » and the mother of Dr. Thacker, of 1 Christchurch, died yesterday. The deceased lady could tell some stirring tales > of the early days of colonisation, and i was one of the best-known figures among ' the old identities. She was pre-deeeased 1 by her husband several years ago. Mr. L. H. Osborn, who has been local . manager of the State and Fire Insurance ; Department since the opening of the . Taranaki branch, has received notice oJ transfer to Dunedin, where he will have , the district managership of Otago and » Southland. This, of course, is considers able promotion, but it is only a just [ recognition of the energy infused into r his work by Mr. Osborn, and the large- ' ly increased volume of business here as i the result of his organisation. He wijl ; take up his duties late in January. : i Mr. Bain, of Timaru, will succeed him . in charge of the Taranaki branch. Mr. J. M. Brigham, late secretary to the Harbor Board, died suddenly at his residence on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. . Brigham, who was a native of Auckland, was formerlv manager for Messrs. T. and S. Morrin. In 1872 he was appointed secretary and treasurer of the Harbor Board, from which positions he only recently retired, owing to ill-health. On ; the completion of his twenty-fifth year of service, Mr. Brigiham received a flattering illuminated testimonial on vellum from the board. He was also accorded thanks, with a bonus, for the manner in which he acted as the board's representative in London in bringing to a successful completion the agreement with the Admiralty in relation to the equipment of Calliope Dock. ■■ The deceased was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and of the Institute of Secretaries. London. The death is announced in the United States of William Anderson, who was fouv times open golf champion of America. He was a native of North Berwick, and only thirty years of age. He went , to the States about eleven, years ago, . and first won the U.S. championship at Hamilton. Mass., in 1901, after a tie with Alex. Smith, the present holder of the . . title. Anderson was then attached to ' the Pittsfield Club. After removing to Hip Montclair Club he beeame associated with the Apawamis Club, and in 1903, 1904 and 1905 established a record by winning the championship three years ' in succession. In 1905 he took'part in i the British Open Championship at St. Andrews, but his play on that occasion : was disappointing. He took 86 and 88 1 for the first two rounds, and then ' dropped out of the'eompetition.
