AMUSEMENTS.
"ELIJAH." I Lost night ait the Theatre Royal the combined Liederkranz and Liederspiel and the Liedertafel held the final rehearsal of Mendelssohn's oratorio, "Elijah," which is to be sung to-night. The great master's magnificent work is one that every orchestral society longs : to interpret, and gives a strong combination of singers and orchestra remarkable opportunities. The work or last night was notable in many ways. There is cohesion -and enthusiasm, accuracy in attack, capability in the solo work, and ■fine volume in the choruses. It is observed that the balance, both among the singers and in the., orchestra, has been adequately catered for, and although it is impossible -to assess the full value and power of this fine combination in an empty hall, where the acoustics are tar from satisfactory, there is promise of an excellent rendering of one. of the finest oratorios iever written. The Society is fortunate in having the services of several very capable soloists, and their work will be a gratifying feature of what promises to be an ■■.entirely successful periformance. Those who have copies of | '•Elijah" would do well to take them, as i in chorus work it is impossible that the 'whole of the singers enunciate with com- | bined distinctness. heartily commend to-night's perjforma.nce to. the public, and are certain ■ that it will be wholly enjoyable.
