EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The Board met last evening, when there were present: Messrs. J. Wade (chairman), G. A. Adlam, J. Young, W. G. Cargill, H. Trimble', G. W. Rogers, W. McL. Kennedy, and A. H. Halcouibe. AGRICULTURAL REPORT. TJie director (Mr. R. McK. Morison) reported on the work done in connection with the agricultural classes conducted throughout the Taranaki district during! the year. Saturday classes for teachers] were carried on : during the winter i months, when a number of subjects were taken. The Waitui, Warea, Awa-I tuna, Rowan, and Marco schools hadi only been visited once. All the others' had been visited twice during the year.; Experiments had been made and carefully carried out at most of the schools. Thanks were due to the following persons who had so generously given all the manures and seed required: Mr. Newton King, New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Messrs. O'Leary Bros, and Downs, W. Rowe, and others. On the whole, Mr. Morison was well pleased with the work done, the pupil teachers taking the keenest interest in the work, often working under great difficulties for want of more tools. Another most encouraging feature was the whole-hearted manner in which the settlers met him with the classes in giving the free use of trees and plants for demonstration purposes, and inviting them to their private grounds. FINANCE COMMITTEE.
The Finance Committee recommended inter alia: That the Rataptko committeej tie informed that the Board is of opinion l that the partition should be moved so ns to make the infants' room larger to allow an extra row of desks; that the. Board is of opinion that the upkeep ot a picket fence at Mangorei is too expensive, and would recommend that the committee put up some other, kind of fence, a live fence, in preference; that 1 the Board will consider the matter of connecting the Waitara school with the sewerage system when same is in force;' that Mr. Tyrer. Stratford technical director, be granted the sum of £2O as recommended by the director; that the matter of desks, black-boards, and window blinds, and clock for Opua be left in the hands of the inspector to supply if he thinks fit: that the Board will grant a £ for £ subsidy for asphalting at Frankley Road; that the Board does not see its way to lay water on to thu headmaster's residence at Waitara, # STRATFOED HIGH SCHOOL. A report was received from the Stratford District High School committee in regard to the staffing of the school. The Board went into committee, and on resuming it was decided that the report be sent on to the Department, with a recommendation that it be adopted.
