BOROUGH LOAN PROPOSALS

TO BE SUBMITTED TO RATEPAYERS.

At the Borough Council meeting last evening His Worship the Mayor brought down his amended estimates of street and sewerage work, the former involving the sum of £5623, and the latter £5602. He thought the proposals should be put before the ratepayers. Cr. Dockrill asked how it was proposed to raise the amount, as a great deal depended upon that in the way the Council would act. If the Mayor was not prepared to make some statement he would favor further adjourning the matter.

His Worship thought the necessary steps should be taken to ask the ratepayers to sanction the loan for streets and sewers. The issues could not be separated.

Cr. Broome seconded the Mayor's proposals.

Cr. Watkins was in favor of the scheme, which would complete the whole town not alone with sewers but streets as -well. If the proposal was put before the people they would vote for it. • Cr. Dockrill" said that as the Mayor was not prepared to make a statement as to how the expenditure was to be met, th' 1 matter should be deferred until the Council got the statement. His Worship said the revenue was not sufficiently buoyant of itself, and it would be necessary to strike a small rate.

Cr. Bellringer: If the Council approves of the proposals, they will go to a public meeting, and His Worship will have fcometihing to say there. The ratepayers will decided a question like this. In answer to Cr. Clarke, it was explained that it was five years since there was a marked increase in the valuation.

The voting, when the motion was put to the meeting, was:—Ayes: His Worship, Crs. Bellringer, Watkins, ClarKe, Mannix and Browne. Noes: Crs. Dockrill, Wilson and West. It was resolved that the sum' of £11,225 be raised for street and sewerage works, the issues to be shown separately on the ballot paper.
