BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the Inglewood Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Fawcett, Gibbs, Young, Surrey and Tarplee. The chairman of the committee appoined to go into the matter of improving the square, recommended as the best means of improvement that the square be fenced 1 with a light chain fence and concrete posts, and that footpaths b« formed and gravelled with the Council's footpath metal; also that the green be top-dress-ed and levelled and seats be placed in convenient shady places, at a total estimatedl cost of £2l 15s. It had been decided to try and raise the money by public subscription, but on approaching the Tradesmen's Association it was found that that body would offer no support. The committee therefore considered the money could not be 'raised from the outside public. A vote of thanks was passed to the committee and the matter was deferred for future consideration. The Council regretted that -the effort was not supported by the tradesmen of the town. Air. F. C. Bennett wrote re leave of absence, stating that he was unable to return as early as anticipated. —The necessary extension of leave was granted. W. H. Franklyn wrote declining to pay cost of crossing to N. Greiner's shop, but expressing willingness to bear his share of the cost should the footpaths be tarred and sanded.—The amount was written off Mr. Frattklyn's account. W. Lightfoot quoted 2s 3d per lineal foot for sewerage connection. —Tender accepted. The caretaker of the cemetery reported that about fifty new fencing posts were required, also that one gate was in bad repair.—Left in the hands of Reserves Committee, with power to act. J. E. Bennett asked for an electric light pole to be placed in Standish-street. —The Council was unable to accede to the request. The solicitor to the Municipal Association, who had 1 been applied to regarding the agreement between the Council and the Electric Light Co., gave his opinion that the company was within its rights to charge either by meter or by lamp. — Resolved that the Electric Light Co.'s ofer of £1 Is towards the cost of legal expenses be accepted. • A deputation, consisting of Messrs Rolston, Stibbs and Frewin waited on the Council on behalf of the Fire Brigade. Mr. Rolston proceeded to lay the 'wants of the Brigade before the Council, the most important of which was the procuring of 1000 ft of new hose and a map of the borough, showing the position of fire plugs. He also drew attention to the fire plugs, which, he said, were in some cases covered up and in other blocked with gravel. The present hose, of which there was about 500 ft, was not to be fepended on. 'Mr. 'Stibbs said he had heard that t)he Borough Council was hostile to the Fire Brigade. , He had found one plug four inches under the metal and several without chains on the caps. His Worship denied any hostility oA the part of the Council. He had, he said, been five years at the Council table and the Council had always supported the Fire Brigade, whose good! work, and to a great extent unappreciated work, they fully recognised. After lengthy discussion, his Worship moved that 500 ft of new\ hose be procured and that Cr. Tarplee (fire inspector) be requested to report on the condition of hose and general efficiency of the plant.—Carried. The clerk was instructed to advertise that all rates and rents for the current year must be paid before January 15, or will be charged an additional 10 per cent, and also to advertise that the dog tax be 10s, with rebate of 5s if paid before April 30, the clerk to be collector till that date. Cr. Young (chairman of the Works Committee), reported, inter alia, that the by-laws were completely disregarded with regard to cyclists riding on the footpaths and the driving of horses on the streets. He moved that the police be instructed to take action against offenders.—The re port was adopted.
