A London correspondent states that' - Mr. and Mrs. David Laing, of New Plymouth, are staying in Mount Ararat road, Richmond. With them is Miss Laing. - At yesterday's meeting, Mr. W. Wilkes • forwarded his resignation as legal adviser to the Clifton County Council. The resignation was accepted, and the appointment of a successor was held over till next meeting. j Mr. W. H. Rev. Father Treaeey was also J presented with an illuminated address. J The death occurred at Napier on Wed- -J nesday of Mr. Thomas Waitt Balfour, || aged 68, after many weeks' illness. He .J was born at Roxburgshire, Scotland, in 'Jj L 843. He came to the Dominion at nine- '§! teen, and entered the staff of the Bank M of New Zealand, Christchurch and Lyt- '4 telton. Later, he was transferred to g Greytown, and in 1877 he was appointed • % jnanager at Napier. He retired on a if pension when amalgamation with the -M Colonial Bank took place. In his early. l *|| days he took a prominent part in ath- m letics, especially football. He married ■ the second daughter of Mr. C. R. Bid will, :M of Featherston. The Earl of Orford, who arrived in 'ijfi Wellington on Thursday from Ameriqa -'a by the Aorangi, is the fifth earl of the line, and is a descendant of Sir Robert ■' Walpole, the famous Prime Minister of J the reigns of George I. and George 11., -a who was created Earl of Orford, Viscount ; ' Walpole and Baron of Houghton. The present Earl is a nephew of the fourth Earl and a son of the late Hon. Fredk; J Walpole, Commander R.N., ,and M.P. He ] was bom in 1854, married Louisa Melissa, \| daughter of Mr. D. C. Corbin, of New J 1 York, in 1888, and succeeded to the title - 'i in 1894. He was formerly a sub-lieuten- s .fii ant in the Royal Navy, and a captain in j the Norfolk Militia, and has been at- "i tached to tihree foreign missions. His | country seat is Wolverton Park, Erping- lj| ham, Norwich.
