THE STRATFORD SHOW

PEOPLE'S DAY. AN UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS. Fine weather for People's Day was all that was required to ensure the financial success of the Stratford Show, which had on the opening day proved so successful in every other respect, and had caused visitors to war enthusiastic over the marvellous organising powers that must have been brought into .play by the management. When the morning broke cloudy and showery some of the officials looked dubious, but the weather cleared up as only Taranaki weather can, so that by mid-day the sun was shining, and a beautiful warm afternoon resulted. There was a great crowd of from 6000 to 7000 present. The Kaponga Brass Band, under Conductor J. Highan, rendered a most enjoyable programme ol music. The secretary, Mr. E. Jackson, i« undoubtedly the right man in the right place. Although at times beseiged by inquirers, he preserved his equanimity and attended to his multifarious duties with precision and tact. Mr. W. P. Kirkwood was a most obliging Press steward.

HORSES. In the thoroughbred section the entries were judged yesterday. There were only two shown, and the New Plymouth winner, Bombardo, had to lower his colors to Cheshire, owned by J. Casserley, of Hawera. There were four entries in the class suitable for breeding carriage horses and weight-carrying hacks, and the judge, Mr. Gillies, ultimately bracketed Captain Mitchell's Silver King and W. G. Crozier's Berlin Mac for first position. Ia the draught' classes the horses were a good lot, but some could have been "got up" better. Jas. Grant's (Hawera) two-year-old colt Baron Grant was awarded the championship. This horse also secured first prize for entire travelling in the Stratford or Eg- j mont counties. The champion mare was A. Eraser's (Tariki) Kate McCaulay, A. Hastie's two-year-old Tokoaroa being awarded reserve champion. A. Boyd Toko, was first with Major in the geld-1 ing class, 4-years or over. The best dry, mare went to A. Fraser, Tariki, with Kate McCaulay.
