The British India Steamer Navigation Company has issued a writ against the Government claiming £IOO,OOO damages in connection with the steamer Waipara striking a rock in Moreton Bay while being taken to sea. The steamer was badly damaged.
SYDNEY WATER CONSUMPTION. Sydney, December 8. The report of the Water Board shows that Sydney and suburbs consume nearly twenty-seven million gallons of water daily, an average of 40y 2 gallons per head of population. MORE GOLD. Sydney, December 8. A discovery of gold is reported near Narrandera and a large area has been pegged. LEVELLING UP PRICES. Melbourne, December 8. In view of the increased cost of supplies as the result of Arbitration Court awards and seamen seeking increased wages, the steam ship companies eontemplate a revision of inter-State rates. SUFFERING FROM DROUGHT. Sydney, December 8. Private advices from Gilbert Island state that the Natives are suffering severely from drought. There has been no rain for months, and food supplies are exhausted. The Government is affording relief. '
OVERLAND CYCLIST. Adelaide, December 8. Birtles, the overland cyclist, has arrived en route, to Sydney. A WRETCHED SUBSTITUTE. Sydney, December 8. The Sydney police report that methylated spirit drinking on Sundays when no other liquor is obtainable is becoming very prevalent.
