WAITARA RACES. The Waitara Easing Club's annual • meeting was held at the Sentry Hill racecourse yesterday in good weather. The attendance was not large, but the racing was up to the usual high standard. The general arrangements for the comfort and convenience of the public were adequate. The results are as follows:

HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, of 50 sovs, second horse 10 sovs, six flights of ■hurdles. One and a half miles. W. Roberts br g Claremon-t (St. CyriSpray) lOst 1 S. Pitt's b g Paul, lOst 2 J. Lupton's b.m. Loopline, 9st 3 Also started: A. T. Lake's Otehau 9st. When the barrier went up, Claremont jumped to his work, and kept at it. He contested valiantly with Otehau, who ultimately dropped behind, leaving the issue between the other three. Claremont made small potatoes of his adversaries, and flashed past the judge's stand with some "hair and hide" to spare. Paul was not far in the rear, and Loopline gazed on his tail. Time, 2min 54sec. MAIDEN PLATE, of 40 sovs, second horse 10 sovs, weight-for-age. About

Sinn Fein, got away without hesitation, and Silver Spur set out to undo him. Sinn Fein galloped gallantly, and Lady Loo was well within herself. Time, lmin 49sec. LBPBERTON STAKES, of 40 sovs, second horse 5 sovs. Weight Bst. Distance five furlongs. S. Pitt's b.g. tHinekorangi was left at the barrier, and there was a neck-and-neck tussle between Prancer and Red Lupin. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The news of Emblem's death at Feildin« came as a surprise to most people, and her owner must be accounted unlucky in losing the services of such a | speedy mare. Of late, Emblem developed a very bad temper, and it is probable that internal troubles had much to do with her sourness towards racing. She started nineteen times last season, winning: on five occasions. Have you seen the latest quotations on the Auckland Cup? Kopu, who is going well at Ellerslie now, is at a ridiculously short price. Indeed, the little chestnut would pay more on the day if he were lucky enough to win. Of course, Diabolo, Sedition and Bridge are priced low, and they are considered certain starters. Advocate has been feeling the effects of the hard going, and had to be eased a little in her work. In consequence, her price has lengthened. Taken from any [point, this year's Cup acceptance is a j shockingly poor one. Of the fifty-eight more or less sprinters weighted, only thirteen have made the payment.

Bridge is reported to be putting in good work, and should be very fit on the day. The other Hawke's Bay candidate, Merriwa, could not stand the preparation Now that Armlet has burst up in the ' lower limbs, Mr. G. D. Greenwood has decided to give her a good spell, and then send her to the matrons' paddock. Interesting to note that the gallant little daughter of Menschikoff cost her present owmer 500 guineas at the Stead dispersal sale, and in two seasons since has won ten races, worth £3853. She was a bargain—one of the few at that sale. Stratford nominations are more numerous than ever this year, hack races in particular drawing record enties. The Eketahuna Express says Mr. J. Sweeney, of Pahiatua, who won the big jump at the last Farmers' Union shaw, with Flamingo, some months, back, disposed of the horse to Mr. Buchanan for £IOO. Mr. Sweeney has also sold Prinoess. who secured third prize in the 1 let ' hack .plass, to jh/tr. lancaste'r,
