AN IMPORTANT JUDGMENT. Wellington, Thursday. Mr. Justice Cooper delivered a very important judgment in the Supreme Court to-day. An originating summons was brought by the trustees of the Levin estate against the Commissioner of Taxes to determine the basis of the absentee tax on property valued at £95,000. It was contended for plaintiffs that an absentee who was a joint owner was not liable if he owned no other land in New Zealand. His Honor held that the Commissioner had assessed the amounts correctly, and that absentees are liable.
