CANADIAN MAIL SERVICE
TRADE COMMISSIONER'S VIEWS. By Telegraph,—Press Association. Auckland, Yesterday. Mr. W. A. Beddoe (Canadian Trade Commissioner), asked ,to-day for an expression of opinion on tjje cable with reference to the Vancouver mail service, reiterated his previously expressed opinion, that there should be no reason why a Vancouver, Honolulu, Fiji, Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne service could not be run, as not one day would be lost as compared with the present service, which does not include Auckland. "It is a matter for regret that Canada has not got preferential trade relations with Australia, which would put Australia and New Zealand upon common commercial grounds, but that is not the fault of Canada exactly, because Canada is willing to enter into negotiations. .
"It appears to me," he continued, "to be rather unreasonable to expect the Canadian Government to ignore the just claims of New Zealand in the matter of a port of call, seeing that there exist between New Zealand and Canadareciprocal tariff arrangements."
SIR JAMES MILLS INTERVIEWED. Wellington, Yesterday.
Sir James Mills returned by the Aorangi. He said that the Canadian Government was mos.t anxious that New Zealand should be included in the Vancouver service. He hoped that Australia would agree to omit Brisbane in order to include Auckland. Australia, he said, pointed out that New Zealand had a reciprocal tariff'with Canada, and the latter would place Australia on the same footing if applied to, and give the same preference to similar products as was given to New Zealand. Future arrangements, as soon as the contract for
the Vancouver service was settled, were to withdraw the Zealandia and substitute a larger and faster steamer than the Makura, the Zealanda entering into colonial trade. The Huddart-Parker Co. will be associated with the Union Company in the new venture. The Matai will be withdrawn from the 'Frisco service for a new and larger vessel, which, with the Aorangi, will burn oil fuel. Sir James Mills hopes that New Zealand will be able, at a future date, to supply oil fuel for use on some of the vessels in the Union fleet. The company watch closely all developments in internal combustion engines for steamboats, also turbine cum reciprocating engines. He is much impressed with the trade possibilities of the 'Frisco service, after close enquiry on the spot and intercourse with leading commercial men in the States and Western Canada as far as the Vancouver trade is concerned.
