A MINING ACCIDENT
THE KILLINGWORTH MINE SEALED,
By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, December 8. Nobody was in the Killingworth pit. A man working at the pit mouth had a narrow escape. He iwas blown off his feet, and scrambled out of danger. An immense quantity of broken machinery and hauling ropes were driven right. Up, and practically blocked the shaft. The adjoining pit shaft has been damaged. The Killingworth pit has been idle for eight weeks.
Daily examinations of the workings were made, and the fans kept going. The last examination was an hour and a half before the explosion, when everything was apparently right. It is presumed that the explosion iwas caused by a fall of the roof in the bricked-off portion of the workings. Sealing of the pit is proceeding. Several men engaged in the work have been sligMly affected' by afterdamp. It will not be possible to ascertain the full extent of the d'amage, or if the eolliiery is on fire, till, the pit is re-opened.
